React or Respond? The Choice That Defines the Storm

Storms are part of life. Some are obvious. Others are silent.
Sometimes they’re a health diagnosis. A financial setback. A struggling relationship. A difficult conversation. The loss of someone you love. Or simply a day where it feels like the weight of the world is sitting on your shoulders.
Over the years, I’ve learned something both in my personal life and during my years in law enforcement.
The storm isn’t always what hurts us the most.
It’s how we choose to handle it.
For 27 years as a police officer, I responded to thousands of calls. Some were chaotic. Some were heartbreaking. Some changed lives forever. One thing became very clear: when emotions take over, good people can make decisions they regret for the rest of their lives.
The same is true outside of police work.
When life catches us off guard, we have two choices.
We can react.
Or we can respond.
A reaction is driven by emotion. It’s immediate. It’s fueled by fear, anger, frustration, or panic.
A response is different.
A response creates space.
It allows us to breathe.
To think.
To pray.
To seek wisdom instead of simply seeking relief.
That pause can change everything.
I’ve found that calm isn’t the absence of a storm. Calm is choosing not to let the storm control you. Faith reminds me that even when I can’t see the outcome, I don’t have to face it alone. Hope reminds me that today’s circumstances don’t have to become tomorrow’s destination.
Those three things… calm, faith, and hope have carried me through some of the toughest seasons of my life.
When I feel myself starting to spiral, I try to remember one simple question:
Am I reacting…or am I responding?
That one question forces me to slow down. It helps me move from emotion to intention. From fear to faith.
We may not control what happens to us.
But we always have influence over what happens next.
That’s where resilience begins.
Not by pretending life isn’t hard.
Not by avoiding the storm.
But by choosing our next step with purpose.
The next time life throws something unexpected your way, give yourself permission to pause before you speak. Pause before you send the text. Pause before you make the decision.
Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do isn’t reacting faster.
It’s responding wiser.
Because storms will always come.
But your response will determine whether the storm defines you…or develops you.
Choose calm.
Choose faith.
Choose hope. You may not stop the storm, but you can become stronger because of it.
