Look Again … The Opportunity Is There

What if the obstacle in front of you isn’t blocking your path…
but building the person you need to become?
Most people see the problem.
Very few train themselves to see the opportunity inside it.
Most people quit at what they see.
The missed deal.
The rejection email.
The closed door.
The diagnosis.
The betrayal.
The season that didn’t go the way you planned.
Surface level challenges scream loud. They demand attention. They pull your focus to what’s wrong, what’s unfair, what’s broken.
But what if the surface isn’t the story?
After 25 years in law enforcement, I learned something powerful: what you see first is rarely what’s really happening. The loudest part of a scene isn’t always the most important part. You have to slow down. Assess. Breathe. Look deeper.
The same is true in life.
Most challenges show up disguised as loss. But underneath loss is often redirection. Underneath frustration is refinement. Underneath disappointment is development.
I’ve lived it.
When Dee and I were told we couldn’t have children, it felt like a door slammed shut. Surface level? Pain. Confusion. A dream interrupted.
But what we couldn’t see then was that the very void we felt would become the birthplace of something bigger than us. That pain deepened our compassion. It expanded our capacity to serve. It strengthened our marriage. It shaped the heart behind Resilient Minds.
What looked like an ending was actually a calling.
Here’s the truth: challenges are rarely punishments. More often, they are invitations.
An invitation to grow.
An invitation to pivot.
An invitation to become someone stronger, wiser, more grounded.
The surface says, “This is happening to you.”
Growth whispers, “This is happening for you.”
But you won’t hear that whisper if you stay at surface level.
You have to train yourself to pause.
To ask better questions:
- What is this teaching me?
- What skill is being developed right now?
- Who am I becoming because of this?
Pressure reveals what’s inside. It doesn’t create it.
And if you’re willing to look deeper, you’ll often find opportunity hiding inside discomfort.
The deal that fell through might protect you from the wrong partnership.
The setback might build resilience you’ll need later.
The hard season might connect you to people you were meant to help.
Opportunity doesn’t always look like promotion.
Sometimes it looks like preparation.
We live in a culture that wants fast wins and visible success. But real growth happens beneath the surface — where roots grow before fruit appears.
So the next time you hit resistance, don’t just react.
Pause.
Look again.
Go deeper.
Because the obstacle might actually be the assignment.
The delay might be the development.
And the challenge might be carrying the exact opportunity you’ve been praying for.
When you change your perspective, you change your trajectory.
Look beyond the surface. The opportunity is there.
