Determination is often associated with goals. The ability to think of a goal and develop a mindset to achieve it are markers of determination. However, rather than thinking of determination in terms of goals, consider it in terms of a commitment. Whether it is something small like hitting 5,000 steps in a day or something big like living life with resilience and optimism, determination goes a long way when you want to commit to something. However, determination alone is not enough; in fact, we often think of determination and willpower together; what, then, is their distinction?
What Is the Difference Between Determination and Willpower?
While determination usually refers to a person’s commitment to a goal or mindset, willpower refers to a person’s ability to resist temptations and reach that goal. Needless to say, despite being different, they go hand in hand when trying to achieve something. A perfect depiction of this is the yin and yang. When committing to something, there cannot be pure and utter determination without willpower, and vice versa.
This means that while determination is the driving force to push someone to do something or reach a goal, willpower helps you overcome temptation that may swerve you from the path you wish to take. Both determination and willpower play a role in achieving what you want, and you can go to great lengths when trying to redefine the self, develop a better attitude, and change a certain mindset or way of life.
How Do We Develop Stronger Willpower?

Strong willpower does not happen overnight; it can take years to cultivate it. However, instead of thinking about overcoming all temptations right away, consider breaking them down into smaller steps. Every great beginning always starts with the first step.
Say you want to live a healthier lifestyle and stop eating fast food. If you eat fast food for lunch every day, it seems impossible to go from daily to completely cutting it out of your life. This means that trying to overcome temptation with determination and willpower can also come in steps. For example, instead of getting fries, ice cream, and soda every time you eat, you slowly try to cut the fries, then the ice cream, then the soda, then instead of having it every lunchtime, make your Friday lunchtime fast food – free, and taper it off slowly until you have completely cut it out from your life.
This is just one example of how we can take small steps to develop stronger willpower and change ourselves and our way of life. However, make sure that before you try to make a change, you have to make an effort to know yourself more and gauge your capabilities as you slowly try to change your lifestyle. Be realistic when setting goals while trying to develop willpower against temptation because setting a goal for yourself that is too unachievable will just lead you back to where you began in the first place.
One important thing to note when trying to develop stronger willpower is that it should become a routine. It is not enough to change once or just for a week. Willpower means developing yourself for those habits, mindsets, or values to last a lifetime.
What Makes Determination and Willpower Important?

Everyone wants something, and to achieve what you truly wish, you must set goals to complete them. Determination and willpower always play a significant role when trying to achieve goals – determination to keep that goal, change a mindset, and develop stronger willpower to avoid temptations that hinder people from achieving that goal.
Moreover, these qualities also allow us to make better choices. The ability to discern correctly, understand our values, and get the courage to fight for what we want is infringed in our determination to keep and uphold a particular belief, value, or right. As seen in the world of politics, where people begin to stand up for what they believe in and fight for what they believe is right, this is just a manifestation of how determination and willpower make a difference in the greater scheme of things – influencing world leaders, laws, and ultimately the general population.
Lastly, determination and willpower help people build resilience – to get back up after losing a fight. It means that people learn how to adapt to new situations and continue to strive amidst adversities.
