CRISIS = Opportunity: Finding Growth and Resilience in Challenging Times by Michael Pellegrino is all about living life with resilience and optimism. Without these two pillars in life, overcoming challenges and obstacles can be nearly impossible to do.

Yet, there can also be difficulty, even if we are resilient and optimistic, in determining which challenges are right for us. Noticing the signs can itself be a challenge. After all, not all challenges should be met with equal enthusiasm and vigor. Sometimes, a challenge may still be too much for us, requiring us to take some time to further improve ourselves before undertaking the task.

A Life of Opportunity at Every Corner

We are constantly bombarded with opportunities.

At every turn, at every milestone, at every little moment, there might be a new job, another side hustle, a possibility of investing, an invitation to whatever event, etc.–the world is a whirlwind of potential paths.

But how do we navigate this maze of possibilities and choose the right ones? How do we discern between a genuine opportunity for growth and a potential pitfall disguised as one?

The method to all this madness lies in noticing the signs. It is in developing a sense of discernment and understanding of which opportunities are worth challenging and which are best left behind.

Knowing which opportunities to take and which not to is acknowledging that not all opportunities are created equal.

Sometimes, rejecting a chance at something is an acceptably perfect choice to make, not only for ourselves but for our future.

The Art of Discernment

So, how do we develop a discernment to navigate the sea of opportunities and choose wisely?

As with everything, it starts with self-awareness.

If an opportunity presents itself to you, start by asking yourself any of these questions before taking it:

  • Does this chance align with who I am? If an opportunity requires you to compromise your fundamental beliefs or principles, it’s likely not the right path for you, no matter how lucrative or prestigious it may seem.
  • Will this opportunity further my long-term goals? Consider where you want to be in five, ten, or twenty years. Will this opportunity help you move closer to those goals, or will it distract you from them?
  • Is there any genuine interest in this path? Passion and enthusiasm are essential for long-term success. If you’re not genuinely interested in the opportunity, it might be difficult to stay motivated and committed.

Knowing More About Your Opportunities

Once you’ve started asking yourself these initial questions, it’s time to learn more about the opportunity and its potential benefits and outcomes.

If this opportunity is something that was given to you by someone, don’t simply rely solely on the information provided by the person or organization offering the opportunity. Be resourceful. Do your own research. Talk to people who have pursued similar opportunities. Seek out different perspectives.

Noticing the Signs and When to Say No

Sometimes, an opportunity may seem too enticing and too good to be true. If such is the case, there may be red flags that indicate it’s not the right fit.

  • Watch out for unrealistic promises. Some opportunities that promise quick riches or guaranteed success might just be flourishing. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Be careful of being pressured to make a quick decision. Legitimate opportunities rarely require you to make a decision on the spot. If you’re being pressured to commit before you’ve had time to thoroughly consider the opportunity, it’s a red flag.
  • Determine if there is a lack of transparency. If the person or organization offering the opportunity is unwilling to answer your questions or provide you with complete information, it’s a sign that something might be amiss.
  • Be wary of any potential misalignment with your values. If the opportunity requires you to compromise your core values, it’s not worth pursuing, no matter how tempting it may seem.

The world is full of opportunities, but not all opportunities are created equal.
